Information sought for ‘live’ copper wire thefts

Bayside residents are asked to keep a lookout for anyone acting suspicious or selling copper wire following a series of ‘live’ copper wire thefts from Energex sites over the last few months.

The thefts are believed to have been committed by the same person who attends sites in Redland Bay, Mount Cotton and Cornubia and removes an ‘earth’ copper wire by hacking or chopping it with an axe or similar tool.

These thefts are particularly concerning as there is significant risk of electrocution to not only the thief, but also an increased risk to residents whose homes are fed by the live transformer poles and high voltage switch poles from which the cable is removed.

The amount of money a person would get at a scrap yard for the small amount of copper taken is minimal and definitely not worth ones life.

This form of stealing is extremely dangerous.

Residents are urged to share this post on social media.

Anyone that may assist in this investigation is asked to phone Policelink on 131 444 or Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000 to report anonymously.
