PARLIAMENT SAYS YES
Federal Parliament has voted yes to same-sex marriage. It passed with a clear majority – less than four MPs voted no – and will become law in days when it goes to the Governor-General on December 9.
There was wild applause in the chamber when the vote was read out. The public gallery, which had been cheering every small step towards a vote, broke out in song with several politicians joining in.
Several politicians were seen crying and hugging each other. Many were carrying the rainbow flag. The celebrations have spilled into the halls of Parliament House. Staffers rushed out to congratulate their MPs.
Many same-sex marriage campaigners have been dancing and singing. Some broke out into an impromptu rendition of “I am, you are Australian” with many politicians joining in.
